Charikar is the capital of Parwan Province, about an hour's drive north of Kabul. It sits where the Shomali plain meets the Hindu Kush, near the mouths of the Ghorband and Panjshir valleys. The main road north to the Salang Pass runs through the town, and it has long been a stopping point for travellers.
The surrounding plain is known for vineyards and orchards, and Charikar has a reputation for its grapes and for traditional crafts such as pottery and knife-making. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets and bazaars along the highway, with irrigated fields fanning out into the plain.
