Grottaglie Map Poster & Print
Grottaglie lies inland from Taranto in southern Apulia, on the edge of the ravines the region calls gravine. The name comes from the caves, grotte, cut into these limestone gorges, which were once lived in and worked. On a map the old town is a dense knot of narrow, irregular lanes, clearly different from the more regular blocks that grew around it later.
The town is best known for ceramics. A whole quarter of workshops sits against the ravine, and pottery has been made here for centuries, much of it glazed plates, jugs and decorative pieces. The Castello Episcopio, the old bishop's castle, stands at the heart of the historic centre. A Grottaglie map poster shows the compact medieval core and the pale country around it.
Beyond the built-up area the landscape turns into a fine grid of olive groves, vineyards and country roads spreading across the Apulian plain. To the south, Taranto-Grottaglie airport cuts a long straight runway into the farmland, and it is one of the strongest shapes in the wider view. The mix of tight streets, gorges and open fields makes a varied, well-balanced composition.

Limestone gravine
Ravines cut into the plateau around Grottaglie. On a map they appear as winding gaps in the street pattern where the ground drops away into caves and rock.
Airport runway
South of the town, the long straight runway of Taranto-Grottaglie airport cuts across the farmland, a sharp line against the soft grid of olive groves.

Grottaglie appeals to anyone who has bought ceramics in its workshops, walked through the historic centre or has family roots in this part of Apulia. The map captures the tight old town and its ravines with the clarity of a good print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or the year of a visit, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand works well with the pale Apulian stone.
