Sumbar river
The river winds along the valley beside the town, its course giving the map a natural curve that contrasts with the regular pattern of streets.

Magtymguly Map Poster & Print
Magtymguly lies in the southwest of Turkmenistan, in Balkan province, where the Sumbar river runs through a valley in the Kopet Dag range near the border with Iran. On the map the town stretches along the valley floor, with streets arranged in fairly regular blocks and the river's course visible just beside them.
The town was long known as Garrygala and was later renamed after Magtymguly Pyragy, the eighteenth-century poet regarded as a central figure of Turkmen literature. The Sumbar valley is also noted for its relatively mild climate and for the cultivation of fruit and subtropical crops.
A Magtymguly map poster shows a settlement shaped by its valley. The river line, the orderly town blocks and the thinning roads that head into the mountains make a clear composition, and the surrounding blank space suggests the dry, rugged landscape that encloses the green strip of the valley.

Valley layout
Streets extend along the valley floor rather than spreading in every direction, producing an elongated town shape framed by the rising Kopet Dag.
Mountain roads
A few roads leave the town and thread toward the border hills, their thin lines hinting at the steep and sparsely settled terrain around the valley.
