Ahu lies in the north of Jiangsu province, in the low country of the Huai River basin. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and from above the town appears as a compact block of streets surrounded by rectangular fields. Straight roads and drainage channels run at right angles to one another, giving the whole area a measured, surveyed look that changes little from one horizon to the next.
The built-up area mixes older lanes with newer, wider streets and residential compounds, a pattern shared by many towns in the region that have grown quickly in recent decades. Water is a constant presence: ponds, ditches and canals divide the fields and edge the town, and they appear on the map as thin lines and small shapes that add fine detail to the surroundings.
