Akishima lies in the Tama area of western Tokyo, on the flat terraces north of the Tama River. From above, the most striking feature is the long straight runway of Yokota Air Base, which the city shares with its neighbours. It cuts a clean line through the surrounding housing, which fills the rest of the map with a fine, dense pattern of small streets.
The Tama River forms the southern edge, a broad channel with wide riverbanks and gravel bars that give the map a soft natural border. Railway lines run east to west, with stations acting as small local hubs where streets tighten into shopping districts.
Part of Showa Kinen Park, one of the largest parks in the Tokyo area, reaches into Akishima from neighbouring Tachikawa.
