Al-'Alam lies in Salah ad Din Governorate on the east bank of the Tigris, across the river from the Tikrit area. Like many towns along this stretch, it is shaped by the water: the built-up area follows the bank, and irrigated fields and groves form a green belt between the houses and the drier land further from the river.
On the map this produces a clear division. A strip of streets and plots runs roughly parallel to the Tigris, with lanes stepping down toward the fields and the river's curves drawn as a strong, flowing line. Beyond the cultivated band the landscape opens up, and roads leave town in long straight lines across flatter, sparser terrain.
The town is largely residential and agricultural, and its bond with the river is its defining feature.
