Al Jumūm lies in the Mecca Region of Saudi Arabia, northwest of the holy city, in the valley known as Wadi Fatimah. The landscape here is arid, with rocky hills and dry ground on either side of the valley floor. From above, the town follows the lie of the land, with streets and buildings concentrated where the terrain is flat and accessible.
The wadi has long supported cultivation and settlement in this dry region, and on the map the contrast between the built area, the farmland along the valley and the surrounding hills is striking.
