Coastal road
Alofi follows the island's main road along the western shore, so the settlement appears on the map as a long, thin line rather than a compact centre.

El mapa
Alofi Map Poster & Print
Alofi is the capital of Niue, a self-governing island in free association with New Zealand. Niue is one of the largest raised coral islands in the world, often called the Rock of Polynesia, and Alofi lies on its western coast facing the broad arc of Alofi Bay. With only a few hundred residents, it is among the smallest capitals anywhere.
The map shows a settlement that stretches rather than gathers. Buildings line the coastal road for several kilometres, with only short side roads reaching inland across the flat coral terrace. The shoreline is defined by low cliffs and a narrow reef rather than beaches, and small breaks in the rock lead down to the water.
In 2004 Cyclone Heta caused severe damage along this coast, and some facilities were later rebuilt further inland. An Alofi map poster presents that long, quiet line of settlement against the expanse of the Pacific, with the island's interior roads and forest giving way to the ocean along a single, clear edge.

Alofi Bay
The broad, open bay curves along the town's frontage, edged by reef rather than a sheltered harbour, giving the map a clean and uninterrupted coastline.
Coral terrace
Behind the shore the land rises onto a flat terrace of raised coral, crossed by a light network of roads leading toward the island's forested interior.
