El mapa
Annaberg-Buchholz lies in the Erzgebirge, the Ore Mountains of Saxony, and grew rich on silver mining in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The present town joined two separate towns, Annaberg and Buchholz, merged in 1945. On a map, both historic centres are still easy to see, each on its own slope with the Sehma valley running between them.
Annaberg was laid out as a planned mining town, with a large market square and a regular pattern of streets on a hillside. St. Anne's Church, one of the largest late-Gothic hall churches in Saxony, stands on the high ground above the square. The arithmetician Adam Ries lived and worked in the town.
The town is part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Pöhlberg, a flat-topped hill, rises to the east. An Annaberg-Buchholz map poster traces the town's shape: two cores, a valley between them and streets climbing the slopes.
Annaberg and Buchholz each keep their own historic core on opposite slopes, giving the map two clear centres of gravity.
Annaberg's large market square and the late-Gothic church above it form the heart of the planned mining town on the hillside.
The valley between the two old towns cuts a deep, winding line through the plan, with roads and houses following its floor.
