El mapa
Antakya lies in a narrow plain in southern Turkey, where the Orontes River, known locally as the Asi, flows toward the Mediterranean. The old city fills the strip of land between the river's eastern bank and the steep slopes of Mount Habib-i Neccar, the ancient Mount Silpius, in a close weave of narrow lanes. Across the river, newer districts spread west in a more regular pattern.
As Antioch, the city was one of the great metropolises of the Roman world and an early centre of Christianity; the cave Church of St Peter is cut into the mountainside just outside the old town. Its Roman floor mosaics, among the finest ever found, form the core of the Hatay Archaeology Museum. The earthquakes of February 2023 caused severe damage, and much of the city is being rebuilt.
An Antakya map poster records the lasting structure of the place: the river running through its centre, the mountain wall on the east, and the pattern of streets that has grown between them over more than two thousand years. For many, it is also a way to keep hold of a city as they remember it, at a time when its streets are changing.
The Asi runs through the heart of the city on its way to the Mediterranean, separating the old quarters on the east bank from the newer districts on the west.
The mountain rises sharply along the eastern edge of the old city, leaving a steep, empty band on the map where the streets give way to rock and slope.
Between river and mountain, the historic quarters form a dense, irregular web of narrow streets, the finest-grained part of the map and the oldest layer of the city.

Antakya holds a special place for people from Hatay and for everyone drawn to its long history, its food and its mix of faiths and languages. Since 2023, a map of the city has also become a way to remember homes, streets and neighbourhoods that were lost or changed.
