Auxerre stands on the left bank of the Yonne in northern Burgundy, its old town climbing a hillside above the river. Seen from the water, the skyline is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Étienne and the abbey of Saint-Germain. On a map, their location shows how tightly the medieval town was packed onto the slope above the quays.
An Auxerre map poster shows a dense knot of narrow, irregular streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards. These wide avenues follow the line of the former fortifications and give the historic centre a clear, rounded outline. Beyond the ring the layout loosens into later districts, and across the bridges the right bank forms its own quieter quarter.
The town is known for its clock tower over a medieval gateway, for the Chablis vineyards a short distance to the east, and for AJ Auxerre, the football club that won the French league in 1996. The Yonne, which has long carried boats toward the Seine, cuts a gentle curve through the map and separates old and new.
