El mapa
Back Bay is one of the clearest examples of a planned neighbourhood in any American city. Until the mid-1800s it was a tidal basin of the Charles River, and the land was created by filling the flats with gravel brought in by rail. The result on a map is unmistakable: long parallel avenues running east to west, crossed at regular intervals by shorter streets.
Those cross streets run in alphabetical order, from Arlington, Berkeley and Clarendon through to Hereford, a detail locals use to navigate and visitors often notice only after a few blocks. Commonwealth Avenue carries a broad tree-lined mall down its centre, while Boylston Street and Copley Square hold Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library toward the southern side of the grid.
A Back Bay map poster makes the most of this order. The Charles River and the Esplanade form a soft northern border, the Public Garden anchors the eastern end, and the Massachusetts Turnpike cuts a clean line along the south. Framed in black and white, the neighbourhood looks almost like an architectural drawing, which is close to what it once was.
Arlington, Berkeley, Clarendon, Dartmouth, Exeter, Fairfield, Gloucester and Hereford cross the avenues in order, giving the grid a rhythm that is easy to trace on paper.
A wide central promenade divides Commonwealth Avenue through the neighbourhood, appearing on the map as a double line of road enclosing a long, narrow green strip.
The Esplanade and the river basin run along the northern side, a broad expanse of water that contrasts with the dense rows of brownstone blocks just inland.

Por qué Back Bay
Back Bay is a place people remember precisely: a first apartment on Marlborough Street, a marathon finish on Boylston, years of walks along the mall. A map of the grid holds those memories in a form that feels considered rather than sentimental.
Add a title, a subtitle such as a move-in date, and the coordinates line, then pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The digital files include six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF, or a printed poster can ship from a print partner.
