Backnang lies northeast of Stuttgart in the Rems-Murr district, where the River Murr winds through a valley surrounded by gentle hills. The old town sits on rising ground above a bend in the river, and the Stiftskirche and its neighbouring buildings are at the top. On the map, the curve of the river and the compact old core form the town's clear centre.
For centuries Backnang was known for leather. Tanneries lined the Murr, and the town still calls itself a Gerberstadt, a tanners' town. The river that made the trade possible remains the town's most important line on the map. Newer districts spread along the valley and up the slopes on both sides, and roads towards Stuttgart and the Swabian-Franconian Forest leave from there.
