Baghlān lies in northern Afghanistan in the valley of the Kunduz River, north of Pul-i-Khumri, where the Hindu Kush foothills open onto a broader agricultural plain. From above the town appears as a loose network of streets beside the river, surrounded by irrigated fields and canals.
The plain around Baghlān has long been farmed, and the district became known in the twentieth century for sugar-beet cultivation and sugar processing. The main road between Kabul and the northern provinces passes nearby, and the town has served as a trading and administrative centre for the surrounding countryside.
