Banja Luka follows the Vrbas River as it leaves its mountain canyon and opens into a wider valley. The river curves through the city in broad bends, and streets line both banks, with the centre sitting on the left bank near a sharp meander. To the south the valley narrows again, and wooded hills close in around the outer neighbourhoods.
The Kastel fortress sits directly on the river in the centre, its walls forming a compact shape against the water. Nearby, the Ferhadija Mosque, a sixteenth-century Ottoman landmark destroyed in 1993, was rebuilt and reopened in 2016. The city is also known for its avenues of chestnut trees, which earned it a reputation as one of the greenest cities in the region.
An earthquake in 1969 damaged much of the city, and large parts were rebuilt in the following decades, giving it a mix of older blocks and post-war districts.
