El mapa
Barddhamān, often written Burdwan, lies on the fertile plains of West Bengal, north of the broad Damodar River. The river forms a wide, sandy band along the southern edge of the map, and the city grows up from it in a mix of old neighbourhoods, narrow lanes and newer roads. The Grand Trunk Road and a major railway line cross the area in long, straight strokes.
For centuries the town was the seat of the Burdwan Raj, and its legacy shows in the palaces, water tanks and gardens that still mark the map. Curzon Gate, a large ceremonial arch, stands on the main road in the centre of town, and the former royal palace is now used by the University of Burdwan. Tanks and ponds appear as small, sharp shapes among the streets.
Around the city stretches some of the most productive rice-growing land in the state, and Barddhamān is known across Bengal for two sweets, sitabhog and mihidana. A Barddhamān map poster balances the curve of the Damodar with the dense fabric of the old town, giving a clear picture of a place that has long served as a regional centre for the surrounding countryside.
The wide river and its sandbanks run along the south of the city. Its broad, pale outline contrasts with the compact streets to the north and anchors the composition.
This ceremonial arch stands on the main road through the centre, where several streets converge. It marks the heart of the old town and a natural focal point on the map.
Numerous water tanks, many linked to the town's royal past, are scattered among the neighbourhoods. On the map they appear as small, clean shapes that punctuate the street pattern.
