El mapa

Beersheba Map Poster & Print

Beersheba sits on the northern edge of the Negev desert, in southern Israel. The surroundings are dry, open and nearly flat, so the city's shape comes from planning rather than terrain. A seasonal stream, Nahal Be'er Sheva, runs along its southern side and has been turned into a large river park.

At the centre is the Old City, a small grid of streets laid out by the Ottomans in the early twentieth century. Around it, the modern city grew in numbered neighbourhoods, each with its own curving internal streets. Ben-Gurion University, a hospital campus and wide roads link them together.

Beersheba is ancient: the nearby Tel Be'er Sheva is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1917 the city was the scene of a famous cavalry charge by the Australian Light Horse. A Beersheba map poster shows a desert city planned in layers, each era visible in its streets.

01

Ottoman Old City

A compact, regular grid marks the early twentieth-century town. On the poster it sits at the heart of the city like a small, orderly nucleus.

02

Planned neighbourhoods

Around the core, modern neighbourhoods form distinct self-contained units with looping inner streets, separated by main roads and open space.

03

Stream and park

Nahal Be'er Sheva, a mostly dry streambed, curves along the southern edge. It is now a long park that softens the city's desert boundary.
