El mapa
Beolgyo is a town in Boseong County, in South Jeolla Province, set near the northern shore of Yeoja Bay on Korea's southern coast. From above, its streets gather on low ground between hills and the water, with a river running through toward the tidal flats that stretch out into the bay.
The town is widely known in Korea through Jo Jung-rae's novel The Taebaek Mountains, much of which is set here, and a literature museum dedicated to the book stands in Beolgyo. The town is also famous for cockles gathered from the mudflats of the bay, a local speciality with a long reputation.
A Beolgyo map poster shows a compact centre, the curving river, the edge of the tidal flats and the hills behind. The meeting of town and wetland coast gives the composition a distinctive balance, with dense streets on one side and the open, shifting shoreline on the other.
The broad tidal flats of Yeoja Bay lie to the south, forming wide open areas on the map where the town gives way to mud and water.
A river winds through Beolgyo toward the bay, crossed by bridges and giving the street pattern a natural dividing line.
Streets and sites connected to The Taebaek Mountains give the compact town centre a meaning that extends well beyond its size.
