El mapa
Bilecik lies in northwestern Turkey, between Bursa, Eskişehir and Sakarya, in a steep valley cut by the Karasu, a tributary of the Sakarya River. The town is built on slopes, so on a map its streets zigzag and curve along the contours, with the older quarters on the hillside and newer districts spreading onto flatter ground nearby.
The region has a special place in Ottoman history. Nearby Söğüt was the early base of Osman I, founder of the dynasty, and Bilecik itself holds the tomb of Sheikh Edebali, the religious scholar who was Osman's mentor and father-in-law. The province is also known for its marble and ceramics, with quarries and workshops across the area.
A Bilecik map poster shows how terrain has shaped a town. The winding roads, the tight curves of the valley and the long line of the railway create a dynamic composition, very different from the grids of the plains. For anyone with ties to this historic corner of Anatolia, it is a thoughtful and distinctive print.
The river and the main transport routes squeeze through a narrow valley, and the map shows road, rail and water running side by side through the town.
Older neighbourhoods climb the slopes in switchbacks and short, bending lanes, drawing a pattern that follows the terrain rather than a grid.
The tomb of Sheikh Edebali stands in the old part of town, a key site in the story of the Ottoman state's beginnings and a point of pilgrimage.
