El mapa
Bilohirsk lies in the interior of the Crimean peninsula, in the foothills between the steppe to the north and the mountains to the south. Historically known as Karasubazar, it was once an important trading town, and its old core follows the valley of the Karasu river, which winds through the settlement from south to north.
The town's layout reflects that past. Irregular older streets near the river contrast with more regular blocks on the edges, and the remains of the Tashkhan caravanserai recall the time when merchants passed through. Orchards and fields surround the town, filling the outer parts of the map with small rectangular plots.
The present name refers to white rock, and nearby Ak-Kaya, a striking white limestone cliff, is the best known natural landmark of the area. A Bilohirsk map poster brings together the river, the old trading streets and the surrounding farmland in a compact, readable frame.
The river threads through the town along its valley, and the older streets follow its curves, giving the centre of the map its irregular, organic character.
Formerly called Karasubazar, the town was a busy market centre, and the ruins of its caravanserai still mark the historic core near the river.
The name refers to white rock, and the pale limestone cliffs of Ak-Kaya rise just outside town, among the best known sights of inner Crimea.
