Bilthoven Map Poster & Print
Bilthoven, part of the municipality of De Bilt in the province of Utrecht, grew up around its railway station from the late nineteenth century onward. Wealthy residents from Utrecht and beyond built detached villas in the surrounding woods, and the result is a street plan unlike the tidy brick grids of many Dutch towns. Roads bend gently, follow old estate boundaries and dissolve into forest paths.
From above, the railway is the one firm straight line. Around it, the streets form loose, irregular loops, with large plots and tree cover leaving plenty of blank space on the map. Toward the edges, woodland and heath take over, and the drawing becomes a network of paths rather than streets.
The village is home to RIVM, the Dutch national institute for public health and the environment, and to the Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap, the progressive school founded by Kees Boeke. A Bilthoven map poster captures the unhurried geometry of this wooded suburb in clean black lines.
