El mapa
Bintuni lies on Bintuni Bay in the province of West Papua, Indonesia, and is the seat of the Teluk Bintuni Regency. The bay is a long, deep inlet surrounded by one of the largest mangrove forests in the region. On the map, the town is a small street pattern set against a vast expanse of water and swamp.
The streets gather on firmer ground by the water, with a harbour area and roads leading inland. Tidal channels and creeks branch through the surrounding mangroves in fine, tree-like patterns. The bay is also known for the Tangguh liquefied natural gas project on its shores, one of Indonesia's major energy sites.
A Bintuni map poster emphasises the relationship between a small town and a huge body of water. In monochrome, the branching mangrove channels and the bay's shoreline create an organic pattern, with the town's straight streets as a counterpoint.
The long inlet of Bintuni Bay dominates the map, its broad water and indented shores shaping where the town could grow.
Tidal creeks branch through extensive mangrove forest around the bay, creating fine, tree-like lines across the map.
Bintuni's streets gather on firmer ground near the water, forming a compact, orderly pattern beside the wide bay.
