El mapa
Birmingham grew up where two railroads crossed in 1871, and the map still shows it. The downtown grid is set on an angle to true north, following the line of the tracks along Jones Valley. Numbered avenues run with the valley and numbered streets cut across it, so the city centre looks like a neatly ruled sheet that has been turned a few degrees and laid down between ridges.
The railroad corridor through the middle divides the grid into North and South, and addresses on either side carry that label. To the south, Red Mountain rises as a long, steady ridge. Its iron ore helped fuel the city's quick growth into a steel centre, which earned it the nickname Magic City. From above, the ridge appears as a band of curving residential roads, very different from the straight lines below it.
A Birmingham map poster shows that contrast clearly: the regular downtown blocks, the interstates looping around them, and the softer contour-following streets of the hillside neighbourhoods beyond Red Mountain. In black and white, the ridges read through the shape of the roads rather than through shading, and the valley setting that decided where the city would go is plain to see.
Downtown's numbered streets and avenues run parallel and perpendicular to the railroad instead of to the compass, giving the whole centre a slight diagonal tilt that stands out on any map.
A long ridge on the south side of the city, once mined for iron ore. The Red Mountain Expressway cuts straight through it, and the Vulcan statue, a large cast-iron figure, stands on its crest.
The tracks that led to the city's founding still run through the middle of downtown, separating the North and South addresses. Railroad Park now sits as an open green block beside them.

Por qué Birmingham
For people who grew up in Birmingham or studied or worked there, the map is familiar at once: the tilted blocks, the numbered avenues, the ridge on the horizon. It is a quiet way to keep a city on the wall, whether it is home now or a place remembered from years ago.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a neighbourhood, a date or a family name, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The poster comes as HD digital files for $9 or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
