El mapa
Birobidzhan is the administrative centre of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Russian Far East. It grew along the Trans-Siberian Railway beside the Bira River. From above, the centre shows a clear, orderly street grid, laid out with Soviet-era planning. The river's looping floodplain curves around the southern side of town.
The city became the centre of a Soviet project in the late 1920s and 1930s to create a Jewish homeland in the Far East. Yiddish still appears on the station sign and some street names. The Jewish population is now much smaller, but that history remains the city's best-known feature.
On a Birobidzhan map poster, the regular blocks of the centre stand out against the river's looser curves. The railway cuts a firm line across the town. The composition is part plan, part landscape, and it reads clearly even at the smallest print size.
The Bira loops along the edge of the city through low, open ground. Its soft curves contrast with the straight streets of the centre.
The core streets meet at right angles in long, even blocks. This planned layout gives the poster a calm, structured centre.
The railway crosses the city as one long, unbroken stroke. The town grew around it, and the station sits close to the centre.
