The Oker ring

El mapa
Seen from above, Braunschweig has a clear centre. The river Oker splits and wraps around the old town, and those two channels still frame the core on the map. Inside that moat the streets follow the medieval plan, made up of five historic districts that once governed themselves before merging into a single city. Outside the water, a ring of parks marks where the fortifications stood.
This is the city of Henry the Lion. His bronze lion still stands on the square beside Dankwarderode Castle and the cathedral, and the animal has become the city's emblem. Braunschweig is also home to one of Germany's oldest technical universities. Its campus sits just north of the old centre, where the dense medieval blocks give way to the wider plots of the nineteenth century.
A Braunschweig map poster shows several layers of growth at once. At the centre is the tight old core with its encircling water. Around it runs the green belt of the former ramparts, then an outer ring of wider streets, rail lines and newer districts. In black and white, the Oker's double loop reads almost like a hand-drawn border around the city.
The river divides and flows around the historic centre on both sides. The result is a moat that still shows clearly on the map and separates the old town from everything built later.
The old fortifications were replaced by a chain of landscaped gardens that follow the water. They form a soft green band between the medieval core and the later city.
The castle square with Henry the Lion's statue and the cathedral forms the historic heart. It is a compact open space inside the densest part of the street plan.
