El mapa
Bulolo is a town in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, set in a valley in the mountainous interior inland from Lae. The Bulolo River runs through the valley floor, and the town follows its course, with forested ridges rising on both sides and roads running up and down the valley.
The town grew from a gold rush in the 1920s and 1930s. With no road to the coast, mining companies flew entire dredges into the valley piece by piece in large transport aircraft, one of the most ambitious airlift operations of its time.
In later decades, forestry became central to the town's economy, and plantations of pine now cover many of the surrounding hills. A Bulolo map poster shows a settlement shaped by its valley: a river line, a small grid of streets, an airstrip and steep, wooded country pressing in from every side.
The river runs along the valley floor through the town, a winding line that sets the direction of the main road and much of the settled area.
In the 1930s, gold dredges were flown into the valley in pieces by aircraft, an operation that shaped the town and gave it its place in aviation history.
Steep slopes with pine plantations and native forest surround the town, so the edges of the map show ridges and a sparse network of mountain tracks.
