Burbank sits at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley, with the Verdugo Mountains rising to the north-east and the hills of Griffith Park to the south. Between them the city is laid out on a clear, mostly rectangular grid, with residential streets running in long parallel lines. The I-5 freeway and the railway cut across the valley floor, and the airport occupies a large block to the north-west.
