El mapa
Calumpit lies in the province of Bulacan, north of Manila, on the low, well-watered plain of Central Luzon. The Pampanga River and its tributaries wind through the municipality. On a map they create a landscape of loops, channels and low-lying land. Settlements gather along the higher ground beside the rivers and roads.
Calumpit is one of the oldest towns in Bulacan, and its old parish church is a local landmark. The town's centre is compact, but the surrounding barangays spread out along the river banks and the highway. Rice fields and fishponds fill the spaces between them, and seasonal flooding has long shaped the way people live here.
A Calumpit map poster shows how water organises a place. The rivers wind through the frame, roads follow the drier ground, and the small grid of the centre sits among them. In monochrome, the meandering channels become the main design, with the town as its anchor.
The river loops through the municipality in wide bends. It sets the placement of settlements and roads, and it gives the whole map its flowing shape.
Villages run in long strips along the banks and main roads. From above they look like threads of dense streets laid across the open wetland.
The compact centre has a small grid around the church and the municipal core. It is the densest point on a map that is otherwise dominated by water.
