El mapa
Seen from above, Cesenatico is shaped by two lines. One is the Adriatic coast, running almost perfectly straight from north to south. The other is the Porto Canale, a narrow waterway that leaves the sea and heads inland through the old town. Everything else fits around these two lines: a strip of beach, a band of hotels and streets behind it, and then flat Romagna farmland.
The canal port gives the town its identity. Its layout is traditionally linked to Leonardo da Vinci, who surveyed and sketched the harbour in 1502 while working for Cesare Borgia. Today historic sailing boats of the maritime museum are moored along its inner stretch, so the canal works as both a working harbour and an open-air collection. On a map it appears as a thin, slightly angled channel lined on both sides by tight blocks.
A Cesenatico map poster shows how a seaside resort grew outward from a single harbour. Near the canal the streets are short and irregular, which is typical of an older fishing settlement. Further along the shore the pattern becomes more regular, with parallel roads and cross streets built for summer visitors. The contrast between the two zones is easy to see once colour and traffic are taken away.

The coastline is long, flat and nearly straight, so the sea forms a clean boundary along one side of the poster, with a thin band of beach just inside it.
Behind the shore, parallel streets and regular cross roads mark the areas built for seaside holidays. They sit in clear contrast to the tighter, older blocks around the canal.

Por qué Cesenatico
Many people know Cesenatico from summers on its beach, or as the hometown of cyclist Marco Pantani. A map of it brings back those holidays quietly: the canal you walked along in the evening, the street where you stayed, the line of the shore.
You can add your own title, a subtitle and a date, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9, or order a printed poster, with an optional wooden frame, from a print partner near you.
