El mapa
Chak Jhumra lies in Faisalabad District in Pakistan's Punjab, a short distance from the city of Faisalabad. The town itself is compact, built around its railway station and main bazaar, but the wider area is striking on a map because of the land around it: a flat plain divided into regular fields and crossed by irrigation channels, a legacy of the canal colonies laid out in the colonial era.
The word chak refers to the numbered village settlements created when this part of Punjab was irrigated and settled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. That history shows in the geometry of the landscape, where straight roads, field boundaries and canals run in parallel lines. Around the town, small villages appear as dense clusters of streets within this broad agricultural grid.
The railway gives Chak Jhumra its most confident line on the map, cutting through the town and on across the plain. Beyond the town the land is almost entirely agricultural, and the surrounding villages depend on the same canals and roads that shape the drawing. A Chak Jhumra map poster captures a quiet corner of central Punjab, where irrigation and settlement patterns are as clear as any city street.
The railway crosses the town and continues across the plain, a firm, straight stroke on the poster that anchors the small urban centre.
Fields, roads and irrigation channels follow straight, parallel lines across the countryside, a pattern set down when the canal colonies were established.
Small villages scattered across the plain appear as dense knots of streets, each surrounded by the regular rhythm of fields and canals.
