Changanācheri, also written Changanassery, lies in Kottayam district in central Kerala, on the eastern fringe of Kuttanad, the low backwater region of rice fields and canals. From above, the town sits at a meeting point of land and water, with the Main Central Road running through it and waterways leading away toward the paddy lands to the west.
The town has long been known as a trading centre, and its market, established during the era of the Travancore kingdom, has served the surrounding farming and backwater communities for generations. A boat jetty still links the town to the canals of Kuttanad, a reminder that water once carried much of the local trade.
Changanācheri is also an important religious and educational centre, the seat of a Syro-Malabar archdiocese and home to several colleges. A Changanācheri map poster shows the busy road through the centre, the canals on the western side and the green, flat lands stretching toward the backwaters.
