Changtu is a county town in Tieling, in the north of Liaoning province, on the broad plain that extends toward Jilin. From above, the setting is almost entirely agricultural. Rectangular fields stretch in every direction, drainage lines and country roads divide them, and the town itself appears as a compact, dense patch of streets in the middle of that pattern.
The town's layout follows the practical logic of the Northeast plain. Main roads cross at right angles, blocks are regular, and rail and highway lines pass nearby on their way between Shenyang and the cities to the north. The surroundings are known for grain farming, and the change from town grid to field grid is clear.
