This Chaoyang lies in Jilin Province in northeastern China, in the hilly country between the Changbai Mountains and the plains of the northeast. It shares its name with several other places in China, including a district in Beijing, but it is a much smaller settlement. The landscape here is shaped by rolling hills, farmland and rivers that run between them.
From above, the town's layout follows the valley. The main streets run parallel to the lowland, and the blocks of housing, shops and public buildings fill the flatter ground. Where the land begins to rise, the streets thin out and give way to fields and wooded slopes. The pattern is compact and practical, with a clear urban core.
