Chegem is a town in Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasus, just north of the republic's capital, Nalchik. It lies where the Chegem River leaves the mountains and crosses the foothill plain. On a map, the river runs through the landscape in a braided, shifting channel, and the town's streets are laid out in a largely regular pattern on the flat land beside it.
Chegem is surrounded by orchards and farmland, which appear as large rectangular plots around the edges of town.
