Chengqiao is a town on Chongming Island, the large alluvial island at the mouth of the Yangtze River that belongs to Shanghai. It has long been the administrative centre of Chongming, and on a map it is the densest cluster of streets on an island that is otherwise mostly farmland, wetland and village.
The island was built up from river sediment, and the land is almost completely flat. That shows in the map: long, straight roads and drainage channels divide the countryside into rectangles, and the town's streets follow a similar orderly pattern. Water appears everywhere, in canals, ponds and ditches that cross the fields in regular lines.
Chongming is promoted as an ecological island, with nature reserves and wetlands along its coast, and it feels very different from central Shanghai. A Chengqiao map poster captures a quieter side of the region: a compact town set among straight canals, with the wide Yangtze never far away.
