Chernivtsi lies in western Ukraine, in the historic region of Bukovina, on hills along the Prut River. The old centre sits on high ground south of the river, where streets fan out from the central square in curving lines that follow the terrain. Below, the Prut makes wide bends through a flat valley, and the city's northern districts spread across the opposite bank.
From 1775 until 1918 the city belonged to the Habsburg lands, and its architecture, theatre and street plan still reflect that period. The former residence of the Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, now home to the university, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the poet Paul Celan was born here.
