El mapa
Chikugo sits in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the broad plain that shares its name. From above, the land is almost perfectly flat, and the city reads as a loose weave of residential blocks, roads and cultivated fields rather than a single dense core. Straight farm roads divide the open ground into long rectangles, and clusters of houses gather along them in a pattern shaped by centuries of rice growing.
The plain is known for its network of narrow creeks and irrigation channels, and on a map these appear as fine, wandering lines that run between the regular field boundaries. Railway lines cross the area on a north to south axis, and the Kyushu Shinkansen stops at Chikugo-Funagoya Station, which gives the city a clear anchor point. Around the older station areas the street grid tightens into smaller, denser blocks.
A Chikugo map poster turns this quiet agricultural geometry into something graphic. With few hills or coastlines to interrupt it, the drawing relies on rhythm: the repeated rectangles of fields, the thin curves of water, and the firmer strokes of the main roads and rail corridors. In black and white, the result is calm and even, closer to a textile pattern than a crowded city plan.
The Chikugo Plain gives the map an unusually level base, where long straight farm roads and field boundaries form a steady rectangular pattern across most of the city.
Narrow channels meander between fields and houses, adding fine, irregular lines that soften the grid and reflect the plain's long tradition of managing water for rice.
The Kyushu Shinkansen crosses the city with a stop at Chikugo-Funagoya, drawing a firm line through the countryside that stands out clearly against the smaller local roads.
