Chuka lies in Tharaka-Nithi County on the eastern side of Mount Kenya, on the main road between Embu and Meru. Streams running down from the mountain cut the land here into ridges. A map shows the town arranged along the highway, with roads branching onto the higher ground and down toward the valleys.
Chuka is home to Chuka University, whose campus forms a distinct area within the town. It is also a trading centre for the surrounding farms, where tea, coffee and other crops grow on the fertile volcanic soil. Students and market traders set much of the town's daily routine.
A Chuka map poster shows the highway as a firm, curving line, with the town centre gathered around it and a finer network of rural roads following the ridges. The deep stream valleys leave long open bands across the sheet, giving the composition a natural rhythm that is easy to recognise.
