El mapa
Chur, the capital of the canton of Grisons, sits at the mouth of the Plessur gorge where it opens onto the broad Rhine valley. It is often described as the oldest town in Switzerland, with evidence of settlement going back thousands of years. On a map the medieval centre is unmistakable: a small, irregular knot of lanes and squares tucked against the hillside above the river.
Around that core the town spreads across the flat valley floor in more regular blocks, rail yards and roads, while the terrain rises sharply behind it. The Plessur cuts through the town in a narrow channel before joining the Rhine to the north. The result is a layout shaped entirely by its setting, compact where the mountains allow and open where the valley widens.
A Chur map poster also marks a transport crossroads. The town is a hub of the Rhaetian Railway, and trains on the Bernina Express and Glacier Express routes start or pass through here. For anyone who has changed trains in Chur on the way into the Alps, the map is a reminder of the town that stands at the gateway to the high valleys.
The historic centre, with the cathedral on the rise at its upper edge, forms a dense, winding cluster that contrasts sharply with the straighter streets of the later town around it.
The Plessur leaves its gorge and runs through Chur in a narrow line before meeting the Rhine, a thread of water that ties the old town to the valley.
Tracks fan out from the station across the valley floor, a visible reminder that Chur is a key junction for Rhaetian Railway lines heading deeper into Grisons.

Por qué Chur
Chur appeals to people who live in Grisons, to hikers and skiers who pass through on their way to the mountains, and to rail enthusiasts. The map captures a town where geography dictated almost every street, which makes it an unusually satisfying print.
