El mapa
Cirencester was Corinium, one of the largest towns of Roman Britain, and its map still records that past. Several Roman roads, including the Fosse Way, Ermin Way and Akeman Street, meet here, and their long straight alignments run out across the Cotswold countryside. Within the modern town the grassy earthwork of the Roman amphitheatre survives on the southwest side, a rounded shape among later streets.
The medieval centre gathers around the Market Place and the Church of St John the Baptist, one of the grand wool churches built on the wealth of the Cotswold wool trade. Streets spread from here in an irregular fan, lined with limestone buildings. The small River Churn runs along the eastern side, and a ring of relief roads now carries traffic around the historic core.
To the west lies Cirencester Park, the Bathurst estate, with its Broad Ride, a straight avenue running for miles into the countryside. On a Cirencester map poster the park's geometric rides contrast sharply with the organic town plan. The Royal Agricultural University, on the town's western edge, adds another cluster of buildings set in open land.
The Fosse Way, Ermin Way and Akeman Street converge on the town. On the poster their straight courses cut through the rolling countryside and point directly into the centre.
The long avenue of Cirencester Park runs west from the edge of town through woodland. It is one of the most striking straight lines on the map, drawn with almost architectural precision.
The oval bank of the Roman amphitheatre survives as open ground among later streets. From above it reads as a small, rounded shape, a quiet trace of Corinium.
