Cohoes Falls
The Mohawk drops over a wide, curving rock ledge at the north end of the city. On paper it reads as a sudden narrowing of the river, where the smooth line of water breaks against the gorge walls.

El mapa
From above, Cohoes is set by water on nearly every side. The Mohawk River curves along its northern edge, falls over a broad ledge of shale, and then breaks into several channels, or sprouts, that wrap around islands before reaching the Hudson. The city fills the land between these channels and a ridge to the west, so its streets run in tight, uneven bands.
Cohoes grew in the nineteenth century as a textile town, and it was known as the Spindle City. Its mills drew power from a network of canals and raceways fed by the river above the falls. On the map those industrial lines still show as long, narrow strips running parallel to the Mohawk, next to the older paths of the Erie Canal, which once climbed through the city in a series of locks.
A Cohoes map poster shows how much of this history survives in the street plan. Long mill blocks sit near the river, rows of worker housing fill the slope behind them, and Van Schaick Island lies off to the east, separated from the mainland by a thin line of water. The Hudson forms a straight boundary on the far side, and bridges cross the channels at short intervals.
The Mohawk drops over a wide, curving rock ledge at the north end of the city. On paper it reads as a sudden narrowing of the river, where the smooth line of water breaks against the gorge walls.
Below the falls the river divides into several channels before joining the Hudson. They cut the eastern edge of the map into islands, giving Cohoes an unusually fragmented shoreline for a city of its size.
Power canals built for the textile mills run in long, straight lines beside the river. Together with the traces of the Erie Canal, they add a layer of engineered geometry to the natural curves of the water.
