El mapa
Collinsville sits on the eastern bluffs of the Mississippi River floodplain, about a dozen miles east of downtown St. Louis. Its map shows two landscapes side by side. Hilly, wooded ground and older streets lie on the upland, and the flat American Bottom opens out to the west, where Interstates 55 and 70 cut long diagonals.
Just to the west lies Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, the remains of the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Collinsville is also known for the Brooks Catsup Bottle water tower along Route 159, and for hosting an annual horseradish festival, a nod to the region's horseradish farms.
A Collinsville map poster places the town's uptown streets and the highway interchanges within the same frame, with the bluff line between them. In black and white, the change from winding upland roads to the open, gridded bottomland is easy to read.
The edge of the Mississippi bluffs runs past the city, separating hillier, winding streets from the flat American Bottom that stretches west.
The Cahokia Mounds site lies just west of town, where earthworks and open ground form a distinctive empty area amid the surrounding roads.
Interstates 55 and 70 run together across the area, and their interchanges add sweeping curves to the western side of the map.
