El mapa
Creve Coeur sits in the western part of St. Louis County, Missouri, and from above it reads as a suburb of curves rather than grids. Residential streets bend around low hills and creek valleys, ending in cul-de-sacs that look like small leaves on a branch. The city takes its name from Creve Coeur Lake to the west, and the French name is usually translated as broken heart.
Two lines give the map its structure. Olive Boulevard runs east to west through the city as a long commercial spine, and Interstate 270 crosses it on a north to south course, with a large interchange where the two meet. Between and around them, subdivision streets fill the space in dense, winding patterns. Green gaps mark parks, school grounds and the wooded edges of the creek corridors.
Creve Coeur is also known for plant science. The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and the agricultural research campus long associated with Monsanto, now part of Bayer, both stand within the city. On paper, a Creve Coeur map poster shows how quiet streets and large corporate campuses sit close together, drawn in fine black lines where every loop and dead end stays readable.
Olive Boulevard crosses the city from east to west as its main commercial road, a straight, steady line that holds the looping residential streets on either side in place.
Interstate 270 runs north to south through Creve Coeur, and its interchange with Olive Boulevard makes one of the heaviest and most recognisable shapes on the map.
Postwar and later subdivisions fill much of the city with curving lanes and rounded dead ends, a pattern that turns into a fine, almost botanical texture in black and white.
