Dafengdong is a small town in Guizhou province in south-west China, in a region known for karst landscapes. On a map, the area looks crowded with low, rounded limestone hills. Roads cannot run straight here. They wind along valley floors and between slopes, and the town's buildings gather on the flatter ground where a few routes meet.
Around the settlement, farmland follows the terrain, with terraced fields on the lower slopes and scattered villages linked by narrow lanes. Streams run through the valleys and sometimes disappear underground, as they often do in karst country. The overall pattern is irregular and closely tied to the land, quite unlike the planned grids of China's larger cities.
