Děčín lies in northern Bohemia, where the Elbe cuts through the sandstone uplands on its way to Germany. The river divides the town into two halves joined by several bridges, and steep wooded slopes rise on both sides. The Ploučnice flows in from the east and joins the Elbe here, adding a second, smaller valley to the pattern of streets.
Děčín Castle stands on a rocky spur above the river, with a long walled approach known as the Long Ride leading up to it. Across the water rises the Pastýřská stěna, a sheer sandstone cliff with a lookout and the town zoo on top. Just downstream the landscape opens into Bohemian Switzerland, known for its rock towers and gorges.
A Děčín map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by its river. Streets follow the curves of the valley, the railway hugs the banks, and the buildings thin out as the slopes grow steeper. In black and white, the broad ribbon of the Elbe and the dark mass of the surrounding hills give the composition a strong natural structure.
