Dīla sits in the highlands of southern Ethiopia, on the main road that runs from Addis Ababa toward the Kenyan border at Moyale. On a map the town follows that road closely, with the densest streets gathered on either side of it and smaller lanes branching into the surrounding hills. The terrain is uneven, so the street pattern bends and loops rather than forming a strict grid.
The town is the main centre of the Gedeo area, a region known for coffee grown in shaded, densely planted smallholdings. That cultivation surrounds the town, giving the edges of the map a soft, scattered pattern of paths and homesteads. Dilla University adds a sizeable campus to the town's footprint, a set of larger blocks and open grounds within the urban area.
