Dongdu lies in the hill country of central Shandong, where rounded uplands alternate with broader, flatter valley floors. The town is built on one of those flatter areas, and from above its streets form a moderately regular pattern. A few main roads carry traffic across the valley and link the town with its neighbours, giving the map a clear framework.
Like many towns in this part of China, Dongdu has grown quickly in recent decades, and the map shows both older, closely spaced lanes and newer blocks with wider streets and larger footprints. The edges of the town blend into farmland and villages, where field boundaries and small roads add a light texture around the denser centre.
