Donoussa is the easternmost of the Small Cyclades, lying east of Naxos in the Aegean. It is a compact island of bare, rounded hills and terraced slopes, with a coastline of bays, beaches and rocky headlands. Its settlements are few and small, so the map is drawn mainly by the shape of the coast and a light network of roads and footpaths linking the villages.
The port village of Stavros sits on a sheltered bay, where the ferries arrive and most of the island's life is concentrated. From there a road and a set of old paths lead to the other villages spread across the hills and to beaches around the coast.
