El mapa
Drobeta-Turnu Severin stretches along the left bank of the Danube in south-western Romania, just downstream of the gorge known as the Iron Gates. The river is the dominant shape on the map, a broad band of water separating the city from Serbia. The town rises from it in gentle terraces.
The modern centre was laid out in the nineteenth century on a regular plan, so the core reads as a neat grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks. Parks and public squares sit inside that pattern, and the most recognisable building is the old water tower. Beyond the centre, newer districts and industrial areas extend along the river and up the slopes.
History here reaches back to Roman times. Near the riverbank stand the remains of the fort of Drobeta and the pillars of Trajan's Bridge, built across the Danube in the early second century. A Drobeta-Turnu Severin map poster places that ancient crossing point beside the tidy modern grid, with the river's long curve setting the composition.
The wide river forms the city's southern edge and the border with Serbia, giving the map a strong, calm band of empty space that balances the dense street pattern.
The planned centre is built on straight, evenly spaced streets and rectangular blocks, one of the most orderly town plans on the Romanian stretch of the Danube.
By the riverbank, the ruins of the Roman fort and the remaining piers of Trajan's Bridge mark the spot where the empire once crossed the Danube into Dacia.
