Edison is a large township in Middlesex County, central New Jersey, with the Raritan River along its southern edge. On a map it is a patchwork rather than a single centre: residential subdivisions with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, office parks, rail lines and some of the busiest roads in the state, including Route 1, Route 27, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.
The township is named after Thomas Edison, whose Menlo Park laboratory was located here and where he worked on the phonograph and the practical incandescent light bulb. The site is marked today by the Thomas Edison Center and a memorial tower topped with a large bulb. Edison is also known for Oak Tree Road, a long corridor of South Asian shops and restaurants.
